BMW F650 Guestbook

16/08/03 - From Thumper-Joe. Nice web site. Best info on-line for BMW F650 owner. I love reading the 'owners' stories and the links. Thank you. Thumper-Joe-USA, Atlanta, Georgia. thumper256@hotmail.com
16/07/03 - From Steve Rowlands, a new owner (today) . Dear Trevor, I've done my research and have bought a 2001 F650GS to collect asap from a dealer. I've had Boxers for some time and have just returned from the Pyrenees. I know that the F650GS will go well, but I also really enjoy riding and enjoying the sights all around us rather than just 'scratching' and generally riding too fast etc. I think that the GS 'fits the bill', and I would really like to meet some fellow riders and take in some sights. I have been thinking of revisiting the New Forest over a long weekend. Could this be an idea shared by others? I'm in Ipswich, Suffolk, (tel work: 01473 787800), and shall be pleased to here from anyone with regards to anything F650. Great website Trevor and all who take part etc! Steve Rowlands a&j@isalolly.co.uk
15/07/03 - Hi, I'm Lou McCartney (Evesham) and I pick up my F650 Funduro on Saturday. I've been biking for 3 years on a Kawasaki W650, but needed a change. I've been involved in the W650 website and organised a meet up in the Midlands, so would love to join you on a ride out. My partner has a Honda Transalp, and I'd envied his lack of aches and pains at the end of long rides, so looked for something similar. Trouble is that we're not well served with BMW suppliers round here, but managed to track down a good bike (fingers crossed).
12/05/03 - Hi, Grenville from Kent here, have just found your site, and I must say it is quite a revalation, just like my '96 Funduro that I have owned for the past two weeks. I can't keep off it, so much in fact that my nice shiny black K100RS is about to be sold. The F650 does almost all that the K bike does, but it gives me such a big smile whilst it is doing it. The problem now of course is that my wife wants one. Keep up the good work. LLANGREN@aol.com
24/03/03 - From Sara Gillard - Hi! Just got back into motorcycling after a 2 year break due to a house move. Saw my imported banana yellow Scarver in SPC at Farringdon and just had to have it!! Have just done over the 1,000 miles and it's about to go in for its first service... Oops!! Had an imported Honda VTR 250 before, so riding a single is "Interesting" but I love it. I've been up the Meon Valley today following my partner on his brand new Moto Guzzi Tenni (V11). Fortunately he's still running it in!! But he rode mine with me on the back of it last week and was well impressed, particularly at the acceleration. He's a big bloke and wouldn't let me carry him!! This is a great site. Hope the rideout on the 6th goes well. I've just moved from Somerset or I would definitely be there. Sara, Fareham, Hampshire.
22/03/03 - From Olaf Mittelstaedt - Just had a short look, (the site has been highly recommended), looks great, will be back, but have to run, weather's just too good. Anybody needing hints where to go in Switzerland, (around Lake Geneva and Lake Constance too), please contact me, since that's where I presently live, (well yes, no, I don't live around two lakes, just Lake Constance). Cheers, Olaf  olaf.mittelstaedt@cab-org.ch
06/03/03 - From Beth Read (Swindon) - Just wanted to say what a great web site this is! I've just bought a '97 BMW F650ST having passed my bike test on Monday! So, after I've gained a bit of experience it would be great to come along on one of the rideouts. Update 17/04/03 - I just done a tour on the F650 in France - We went through Brittany down through the Loire Valley to Le Mans. I went with my husband on his 1100GS and a friend on an 1100RT so it was a proper BMW trip! Great scenery and roads which built up my confidence enormously. Look forward to meeting some of you soon, Beth - tim@videographics.co.uk - www.bike2europe.com
17/10/02 - Hi from Paul Miles - I've just found your website - most excellent! Most people talk about fitting a Laser system to their Scarvers, but I've just ordered the new(ish) Remus Genesis Titanium setup. Should be fitting it at the end of the month. If anyone's interested I'll post a report and send some pictures to you, if you like. Also, have read lots of reports about how 'sluggish' it is. What do they expect from a single? I bought it as a ride-to-work and fun bike, I've also got several Ducatis, but guess what, the Beemer's less of a bummer to ride! Paul Miles, eyeguy@talk21.com
21/09/02 - From Rivi Ron - Brill site, I am a B.T.B.C. member (on 'links' page). I ride a Honda NX650. The only website I have found is Mac's Dominator website in Germany. It was good to start with, but it's not updated, yours seems to it a credit to you. Keep up the good work. I have just added your site to my favourites. Rivi Ron RiviRonMon@aol.com (Lancs)

25/06/02 - 100,000 miles on my 650GS Dakar, by Paul Waterfield.

Don't get excited, I'm not there yet - only another 92,000 to go!

I bought my blue Dakar new in July 2001.

After 20 years (how long!) of riding GS twins, for fun and daily commuting, I landed a job which required me to use a car (bugger!). So I thought I'd give the single a try, as my bike now only needs to be a play thing and as I've always been a trail rider the Dakar seemed an obvious choice.

The bike is, however, fully capable of long distances at relatively high speed, but if I was commuting long distances daily I'd prefer a twin GS. The Dakar can feel a bit strained over distances at 80mph (not helped by noisy screen).

The running in period was OK and reintroduced me to the pleasures of 50 - 60 mph riding (which I still enjoy). However, I did experience annoying stalls and was offered an upgrade (10.1?) at the first (free) service. I declined, and decided to 'ride round' the problem - with it's high first gear I didn't want the increased tickover, that the upgrade would bring, for riding on the dirt (pushing the front wheel on loose surfaces at low speed). Besides, the bike was running so well otherwise, I didn't want to spoil it.

In the first 4 weeks I covered 2,000 miles, but then my Dakar (and myself!) nearly ended up in 'the great scrap yard in the sky' when a 15 year old joy rider (being chased by the police) took a distinct dislike to us. It took 3 months to repair the bike - due to parts unavailability.

The day after I got the bike back from accident repairs the oil light came on - BMW roadside assistance were called and a new pressure switch was fitted (the switch is a known weak point).

My first attempts at bungeeing luggage to the bike failed, so I've fitted a BMW rear carrier rack. And as I use the bike off road I've bought BMW crash bars. The rear plastic chainguard/brake protector gizmo has also been replaced by Touratech items (light weight and look good). Other fitments include handlebar risers and flexible indicators - both Touratech items. Heated handlebar grips were fitted at purchase.

I've have also fitted a modified standard centrestand to make puncture repairs, cleaning, chain oiling etc easier (and creates more space in my garage!).

Tyres - the bike came with Michelin Siracs fitted, great on the road, with plenty of grip and feel. I don't know how long they last as I replaced them with Continental TKC80s (twinduro) for better off road work. I've had to replace the rear TKC after 3500 miles, but I probably could get another 500 out of it. The front wore quickly at first but then hasn't seemed to have worn much at all. Because of their off road nature they do produce noticeable vibration on the road (especially wearing thin summer gloves).

Fuel consumption - 60 mpg over 8000 miles. High of 76 mpg, and a low of 53 mpg (lots of first and second gear trail riding). With my new exhaust I'm getting 65 mpg average (mixture of trail riding and road riding).

Exhaust - I've junked the standard (heavy) exhaust and fitted a Staintune. It's only one sided, but the look is growing on me. The noise is on the loud side of pleasant, with the option of being completely antisocial by removing the baffle (I'm not going to do this!). Unfortunately the Staintune is illegal. Apart from the increased mpg (and weight loss) the bikes tendency to stall has gone! Only stalled once since it was fitted (2500 miles). The bike will now pull much better from low revs and I can keep it in top gear for corners I'd normally change down to fourth for. It has also given me more control off road, with none of that slight fuel injection delay off a closed throttle. The front wheel can now be lifted over obstacles without yards of planning.

I'm considering fitting some sort of chain oiler, but I'm not too happy with drilling my intake for the Scottoiler.

Odometer problems - soon after the accident I managed 200 miles between fill ups (on trip meter), but noticed I'd travelled less than 200 on my odometer. I started monitoring trip/odo readings and found that there was always a discrepancy (could have been like that from new). My odo was 'losing' miles every time the ignition was turned off. My clocks were replaced under warranty at the 6000 mile service. Other GS owners have documented the odometer problem. GS owners check yours. My new clocks started behaving the same after 1000 miles or so. A day's trail riding lost me over 30 miles (I was going backwards at one stage!). New ones on order again.

Niggles - I suffer from squeaky rear suspension and getting to lube the top shock mount is a major operation (sub frame off). The lower part of shock gets quite mucky - I'll be rigging up a flap over the gap above the swing arm. Getting the correct level of oil in the tank is a science that even BMW technicians haven't yet mastered. Breaking the bead on the rear tyre could test the patience of a saint (I'm dreading my first puncture). Tubeless tyres would be nice - far easier to repair flats. That's it really. But lets not forget the awful storage capacity under the seat (small space and tools can slide out between the tank and frame rails).

The Dakar is proving to be a good performer on the dirt, although obviously heavy and tall, there aren't many places it won't go. As I'm getting more adventurous the 'get offs' are getting more frequent - but no damage yet (good design or just luck?).

After 8000 miles (in 8 months riding) I'm very pleased with my Dakar. I don't really like all the technology it uses, but so long as it doesn't break I'll live with it. I still miss the feel of an air cooled twin beneath me but I'm more than happy with the 650 single. With the use its getting it will take me another 8 years or so to reach 100,000 miles - I'll be used to it then! ... Paul.

23/04/02 - My name is Ian and I have a BMW F650ST sitting in the garage. It's now 14 months old and with only 2 miles on the clock. I bought it last year on March 17th and I got taken ill on March 21st. Looking forward to getting it back on to the road soon. Great site, just discovered it this morning.
Yours aye .. Ian. Bowholm@aol.com

17/11/01 -  The Highs (and Highs) of F650GS ownership - Part 2.

I've had the V10.1 upgrade now for 600 miles. What a difference! The change is in fact fairly subtle but it really sorts the bike out. It is much smoother and hence more useable in the low rev range (1800 - 3000rpm). It also seems to have a more linear response over the rest of the rev range. It hasn't stalled once since the upgrade and incredibly its more economical, the mpg has gone from 61 to 69! Definitely recommended.

Downside? None. As some people say there is slightly less engine braking but this is hardly noticeable and it does take slightly longer to return to normal idle speeds but only by a second or two (just like most modern day cars)-big deal!

To top it all I went to the bike show at the NEC and purchased the new Remus exhaust (double sided). It was delivered on Monday, it look brilliant and sounds awesome considering that it is road legal, (I don't know how they swung that one :-]). I have modified the air box intake to match the freer flowing exhaust and now the bike really flies (for a 650 single). It is much stronger in the mid range and oh does it sound good. But the most amazing part is that it still returns 68mpg!! Any thoughts of me getting the 1150GS have now vaporised in the boom of a big single!

Enough of this, I need to go for a ride!! All the best Paul. If you need more info on the above contact paul@buxworth.net and remember this ain't no rehearsal so have fun while you still can ;-}

02/11/01 - I did the BMW Off-Road Skills course in Wales on an F650GS. A fantastic weekend, I highly recommend it to anyone who owns any bike, but specially an F650. I honestly wouldn't have believed what they are capable of. In fact I wouldn't have believed what they got us doing.

Side saddle @ 40 mph on gravel, then swapping to riding the bike standing up with only your right hand on the throttle and your left foot on the peg, other hands and feet in the air! Try it, it's difficult.

My local dealer BVM Moto, in Stroud did the v10.1 upgrade on my F650GS for me for free. The bike hasn't stalled yet, and seems to run much freer. Yep, less engine braking, but I don't mind that.

Next question is tyres, I've done 6,500miles on what I assume were on the bike from new, Bridgestones. Any ideas on what to go for next, bearing in mind I use the bike everyday even in winter, and I never really go off road ?

02/11/01 - Have owned the F650GS for just two weeks and can't believe how good it is. I own a Honda VFR 800 also and wonder now why I didn't try this usable bike years ago. I have racked up the first service mileage already and can't wait to do more. IMHO the bike needs a better screen - even though I have the extended screen already; and it needs an additional lower mudguard on the front. Anyone know where to get one of these?. Also advise on best tyres would be appreciated o.e. mine's got Metzlers. Biking at its best, less is more!!!

26/10/01 - The Highs and Lows in a year and 10,000 miles of F650GS ownership.

Highs: Looks great and is very comfy. Handles brilliantly much to the surprise of a lot of sports bikes that have tried to follow me around the twisty bits. Brilliant fuel economy. I always return 61.5mpg except when touring two up, then I get about 52mpg. Lovely engine response. Good build quality and it's easy to get to everything.

Lows: Stalling problem, it always manages to do this at the most inopportune moments. Hopefully the v10.1 fix will sort this. Servicing costs. The 6,000 mile service cost me £210!! This was a straight service with no additional parts required. The 24,000 mile service for my Renault Scenic cost £69.95. Why the difference? BMW say its because of the costs involved in getting their mechanics expertly trained! At bit of advice for those about to have a service. PHONE AROUND YOUR LOCAL BMW DEALERS FOR THE BEST PRICE (sorry about shouting). I phoned around afterwards, the quotes varied from £145 to £210 for the same thing!

Good Bits: The best accessory by far is the front fender I got from GG-Technik http://www.gg-technik.ch It's worth its weight in gold. The parts they manufacture are designed for the Military and Police GS's they use over there. They are very high quality. I no longer have to keep stopping to clean my headlight. They have a lot of other interesting parts so its worth a look at their web site. BMW heated grips are more or less fitted as standard and are also very good. A braided front hose sharpens the front brake response a treat. I had a chat with an exhaust manufacturer called Wunoff http://www.wunoff.co.uk  They make one-off exhaust systems for anything from submarines to lawnmowers. I have seen some they have made for modern Triumphs and GSXR's and they are brilliant. They said they could make an exhaust for the GS that joins just behind the front LHS foot peg (normal place) and then splits into two back boxes for between £300 and £400 (stainless). This would have the advantage of getting rid of the Cat (=+5bhp) and letting some of the glorious single cylinder sound out. It would also be considerable lighter and it would keep its lovely twin exhaust looks. The down side of course is that it wouldn't actually be road legal :-{

The best tyres (for road use) are the Michelin T66's they inspire confidence, have brilliant grip in the wet and dry, look like cut slicks and don't make a thrumming sound like a Land Rover. I got 9000 miles out of mine and interestingly they both needed changing at the same time which implies a good overall set up to me.

Bad bits: The only faults I've had are a broken front spoke and the oil light coming on once while I was riding the bike just after cleaning it. Both faults were fixed under warranty with no problems. The front brake can sometimes squeal like a truck. This can be sorted by using EBC Kevlar pads instead of the heavily sintered BMW (Brembo) pads. I tried a black Dakar screen which looked great but caused so much buffetting of the air around my head that I had to take it off again.

Overall: Fantastic, I wouldn't consider any other middle weight bike. It could do with a bit more power for touring two up with luggage but what can you expect from a 650 single. Maybe the Wunoff exhaust would sort this. It produces as much power as any of the recent breed of Super-motos with out the discomfort, vibrations and with better fuel economy! If you are thinking of getting one (as Nike says) just do it!!

For more info on anything here contact Paul Palmer on paul@buxworth.net  Happy and safe riding.

25/10/01 - If anyone has any doubts about potential affects of the v10.1 software upgrade on consumption, don't worry, my last tankfull on the F650GS returned 68MPG and a fair bit of that was riding two up.
Steve Charles, stephencharles@btinternet.com  Mold,North Wales. P.S. The bike's filthy again now.

19/10/01 - I had the v10.1 software mod done yesterday on my F650-GS at Blue Bell BMW (Crewe). What an improvement! Much smoother and easier to ride in slow moving traffic. They even washed the bike for me, first wash since I bought it in July, looks like new again. Stephen Charles. (N.E.Wales) stephencharles@btinternet.com
17/10/01 - In a previous life I owned a '94 F650 (from new) for 3 years. I only covered 19,000 miles but not a single thing failed on the machine! I thought that I'd found the perfect bike, until under the lights and glitz of the NEC bike show I found the R1100S and in a weak moment succumbed to the charms of a 'Big Twin' - how many times has that happened in life!!!

Two years down the line I've managed to keep my licence clean (more good luck than good management) but had become detached from the joys of pure motorcycling, when I popped into a BMW dealer and noticed the F650GS. Yes you've guessed it, out for a test ride I went and slipped back into the groove within minutes. Yes this was what I'd been missing, just concentrating on the ride without worrying about the Rozzers, seeing over the hedges again, a more upright an comfy position. enough power when needed but not too much when being enthusiastic and you may think it's not a lightweight bike but after the R1100S it is! So I'm looking forward to collecting my new bike.

15/10/01 - NICE TO SEE A UK SITE AT LAST.. I run a '95 Funduro bought with 6k on the clock 3 years ago, it now has 45k and still pulls like a train. I service it myself after paying over £220 for the first one!! The cost of £56 for a BMW manual soon pays for itself if you intend keeping the bike for any length of time. Only probs I've had are rear exhaust gasket breaking up causing popping on overrun and had to replace h/race bearings twice. (Second, Timken lasted only 6k and were always either tight or loose. Third set cost only £6.50 (!!) from the excellent BMW shop BVM in Stroud). If you rarely travel on motorways stick a one tooth smaller front sprocket on (14 instead of 15?) much more fun, smoother, and you don't need to change down overtaking at 50mph and it'll still do around 100mph. Regards Steve steve.handley@ctpi.co.uk
14/10/01 - Hi my name is Chris Hall, I own a blue GS with a few extra's. Great site - we need all the help we can to get BMW to sort out the "S & S" problem. I've had my GS for 18 months and it's been back to the dealer 4 times to have the "stalling" problem fixed. My dealer at first kept telling me it was the way I was riding the bike - How wrong he was!! It's now booked in to have the V10.1 software fitted at the end of October. We'll see how it goes then. Has anyone fitted the Remus exhaust yet?  If so how does it look?  Photo's of my GS to follow on separate email.
Regards - Chris Hall.  Chrishall99@btinternet.com

28/09/01 - Cool site ... Hope it continues to grow. I ain't got an F650 but its a toss up between one of them and an African Twin. hoping to buy in the new year. Safe riding.
